What does Rashee Rice’s jail sentence mean for Chiefs training camp plans?
The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver has been hit with a 30-day jail term for his role in a multi-car crash.
The Kansas City Chiefs have an unusual problem to contend with this summer, the impending incarceration of a key player.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice was recently sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation for his part in a multi-car crash in Dallas, Texas last year. Rice was driving one of the vehicles in the collision but fled the scene immediately, failing to check on any of the other drivers involved.
There was some doubt about whether Rice could actually take part in team activities ahead of the 2025 NFL season. But he has been given some flexibility in when he chooses to serve his 30 days in prison and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that he will be involved as the Super Bowl finalists continue their preparations.
“We’re going to progress as normal with him,” Reid said this week. “He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’ll normally take. We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future, whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.”
However it is extremely unlikely that Rice will be able to take part in the Chiefs’ first games of the season. He is still awaiting a verdict from the NFL as league officials contemplate a punishment for the 25-year-old.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy has said that the league is “closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review.” It has been suggested that Rice could get an NFL suspension of up to six games as a result of the incident.
Nevertheless he will almost certainly play more game than he managed last season when a knee injury in Week 4 kept his sidelined for the remainder of the season. Once he’s back in contention for the Chiefs he looks set to form a key part of the team offense once again.
