What to expect from Aaron Rodgers’ season with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The four-time MVP signs a one-year deal after weeks of suspense, reshaping the Steelers’ quarterback room for 2025.

Estados Unidos Update:

Aaron Rodgers became the new quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. True to form, he took his time – perhaps too much – deciding whether to continue playing in the NFL or to retire. His hesitation tested the patience of Steelers fans, who had hoped for clarity before the 2025 Draft to feel reassured about the season ahead.

The veteran quarterback had been linked to several teams, including the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and even the New Orleans Saints, who were left scrambling after the sudden retirement of Derek Carr.

Rodgers ultimately agreed to a one-year, $13.65 million contract, with $10 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $19.5 million. The deal also includes $5.85 million in playing-time and team-performance incentives.

Steelers overhaul quarterback roster

Pittsburgh has made sweeping changes at quarterback. The team failed to reach agreements with last season’s starters: Justin Fields signed with the New York Jets, while Russell Wilson joined the New York Giants.

In the draft, the Steelers waited until the third day to select a quarterback, taking Will Howard with the 185th pick in the sixth round. They also brought back Mason Rudolph after his stint with the Tennessee Titans, and signed Skylar Thompson, previously a backup with the Miami Dolphins.

What to expect from Rodgers and Steelers

Rodgers will be seeking redemption after a troubled stint with the New York Jets, where he tore his Achilles tendon and finished his final season with the team at 5–12. Even so, he completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

He has little left to prove – a future Hall of Famer with 62,952 career passing yards and 503 touchdowns. Notably, 14 years ago he defeated the Steelers and Mike Tomlin to win Super Bowl XLV.

The Steelers open their 2025 schedule on September 7 with a Week 1 visit to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, where Rodgers will face former Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields. On October 26, they host the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday Night Football.

The Steelers’ offense looks strong. The team traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and regained one of their leaders, tight end Pat Freiermuth. The receiving corps also includes Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods and Roman Wilson, all competing for the WR2 role. However, the loss of George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys leaves a significant gap.
