Update:

The 2026 NFL Draft is set to begin Thursday, and as always, the spotlight is on the quarterbacks at the top of the board. This year, one name has separated itself from the rest: Fernando Mendoza.

After a dominant college career and a meteoric rise up draft boards, Mendoza enters the week widely projected to be the No. 1 overall pick, with the Las Vegas Raiders expected to make him the face of their franchise.

Fernando Mendoza’s college career and rise to No. 1

Mendoza’s path to the top of the draft began at Indiana, where he developed into one of the most productive and decorated quarterbacks in the country.

The 6′5″ passer put together a historic run, leading the Hoosiers to a national championship while also capturing the Heisman Trophy, an achievement that instantly elevated him into elite company among recent quarterback prospects.

Known for his combination of size, arm strength, and poise, Mendoza consistently showed the ability to stretch defenses vertically while also operating efficiently within a structure. His decision-making and command of the offense improved steadily, turning him from a high-upside talent into one of the most polished quarterbacks in the class.

Combine performance and draft stock

Mendoza only reinforced his standing as the top quarterback in the class throughout the pre-draft process, even without fully participating at the NFL Combine.

Mendoza attended the Combine in Indianapolis, going through measurements, interviews, and team meetings, but chose not to take part in on-field drills or throwing sessions. Instead, he opted to showcase his arm at his Pro Day, where teams could evaluate him in a more controlled environment.

The decision did little to impact his stock. If anything, it reflected his position at the top of the class. Quarterbacks widely expected to go first overall often prioritize private workouts over Combine throwing.

More importantly, there were no red flags during the process. Mendoza has remained the most stable and predictable option, something teams picking early tend to value heavily.

Why the Raiders are expected to pick him No. 1

As things stand heading into draft week, all signs continue to point to the Las Vegas Raiders selecting Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick. The Raiders have been searching for a long-term answer at quarterback, and Mendoza fits the profile of a player they can build around immediately. His blend of readiness and upside makes him an attractive option as they look to reset under center.

There’s always the possibility of late movement - trades, surprises, shifting priorities...but Mendoza has been the consistent name linked to Las Vegas throughout the pre-draft process. At this point, it would be much more surprising if he isn’t the pick.

The face of the 2026 draft class

Every draft has a player who defines it. In 2026, that player is Fernando Mendoza. From a championship-winning college career to Heisman recognition and a steady climb to the top of draft boards, he has checked every box expected of a No. 1 overall pick. Now, with the draft just days away, the only thing left is to see his name called, and where his NFL story begins.
