Why did former soccer star Abby Wambach exit Prevacus, the company backed by Brett Favre?

Soccer Hall of Famer Abby Wambach has announced that she will be removing herself from any involvement in Odyssey Heath, a concussion drug company backed by NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre, following reports that the organization was embroiled in a welfare fraud case through the former quarterback.

Odyssey Health is reportedly working on a nasal spray for people who suffer from concussions, and Wambach was a member of the company’s sports advisory board. She said she invested in the company after learning that it was developing a product that could help athletes with the effects of concussion injuries.

Wambach pulls out after new information came to light

She released a statement to media outlets talking about her decision to step down from the company after news broke out that state funds meant for Mississippi’s poorest residents were being diverted to Prevacus (Odyssey Health’s previous name).

“Minutes after learning this new information, I initiated the process to immediately and fully divest myself from any involvement- financial and otherwise-with Prevacus/Odyssey Health Inc., a process that I insisted be complete by end of day today,” Wambach told ESPN.

The state of Mississippi had filed a lawsuit claiming that $2.1 million in government funds were invested in Prevacus instead of being given to those needing welfare assistance.

“Since I genuinely believed this company was being transparent about a product that could spare the next generation of athletes from the severe impact of concussion injuries that I endured as a professional athlete, I am profoundly angry, disappointed, and saddened by what I learned today,” according to the six-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year.

Wambach has been working on raising awareness on head safety in soccer. She is one of the most successful headers in her sport.
