NFL

Why has the Patriots’ Matt Judon hit out at the NFL over his random drug test?

On one hand, one could ask the question ‘if you’re clean, why’re you angry?’ On the other, could it be that the league isn’t randomly selecting players?

Interestingly, the Pats star is by no means the first player in the NFL to have something to say about the league’s supposedly ‘random’ drug tests and we’re guessing he won’t be the last either.

Patriots’ Matt Judon rips NFL over drug test

If there is one take away from the recent scenario that played out between New England Patriots star linebacker Matt Judon and the NFL, it’s that the Pats’ player is definitely not happy with the league. Following a message from the league, which informed him that he had been selected for a Performance Enhancing Substance test, Judon posted a screenshot of the message on social media on Tuesday morning. It was abundantly clear that he didn’t believe the test was just a case of random selection. See for yourself:

Where the test itself is concerned, it came just days after the Patriots defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-13. On the night, Judon posted four tackles (one for a loss), two quarterback pressures and 1.5 sacks. With that, Judon is now on a career-high 14.5 sacks across 14 weeks. To be clear, he’s tied for the lead in the league with the 49ers’ Nick Bosa, which is to say that at least on the level of a cheeky joke, we can understand why someone might question how Judon is able to perform so well. On the other hand, could he have a point?

Where does the NFL stand?

Officially, the NFL’s official policy on performance-enhancing substances states that each week during preseason and the regular season, 10 players from each team will be selected at random by a computer algorithm and subjected to a test. Needless to say, there have been multiple players over the years that have pushed back on that notion, expressing doubts about whether the process of selection was in fact random. Judon is of course the most recent to do so. Where the Patriots themselves are concerned, it’s worth noting - for the purpose of context - that New England’s defense has been stellar this season, despite their inconsistent offense and Judon has been a central part of that.
