Will Daniel Jones play for the Giants against the Texans? Preseason game injury status for the NY QB

The New York Giants have been handed a big boost ahead of their second preseason game against the Houston Texas, and indeed the start of the 2024 NFL season, by quarterback Daniel Jones’ return to fitness.

The 27-year-old had been out of action since last November, when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. It rounded off a poor start to the 2023 season for Jones, who had impressed the year before.

Jones’ contrasting Giants form in 2022 and 2023

In 2022, the 2019 first-round draft pick threw for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns, and made NFL history by becoming the first player ever with 300+ passing yards, two+ touchdown passes, and 70+ rushing yards in a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.

But he was unable to repeat that form at the beginning of last season, throwing six interceptions and only two touchdowns for a total of 900 yards in six games, in which the Giants had a 1-5 record.

Head coach Brian Daboll has confirmed Jones has fully recovered from his ACL injury and will start on Saturday against the Texans, which is good timing for the Giants with back-up Drew Lock having suffered a hip injury in Thursday’s win over the Lions.

As Lock recovers, third-choice Tommy DeVito will support Jones, who the Giants will be hoping can replicate his form from two years ago as they look to get back into the postseason playoffs after missing out last year.
