Will Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields start in Week 3 against Los Angeles Chargers?

Though he’s now overseen two consecutive wins for his new team, doubts about the Steelers’ QB still remain. That said, he’s got his coach’s vote for Week 3.

Update:

Truth be told, the Pittsburgh Steelers are off to a great start in the 2024-25 NFL season. With a 2-0 record, the Steelers head into a Week 3 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, and by all accounts, the team’s new quarterback is set to be under center once again.

Mike Tomlin is going with Justin Fields once more

According to comments on Tuesday from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, quarterback Justin Fields is set to be the man under center once again in Week 3 when the team takes on the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite rumors suggesting that Russell Wilson could retake his spot as the starting quarterback, Tomlin indicated that the Steelers are in fact ready to go with Fields as the starter when Sunday’s game rolls around.

“We’re readying ourselves around Justin,” Tomlin told reporters. “We’ll stay in that mindset until something happens. Hypotheticals are a waste of time.” It’s worth noting that Tomlin also added that he would not be speculating on who secures the starting job for the team until Wilson is completely healthy.

Where context is concerned, Fields - as mentioned before - is now 2-0 in his first two starts for his new team following his offseason trade from the Minnesota Vikings. During the Steelers’ most recent win, a 13-6 result against the Denver Broncos this past Sunday, Fields threw his first and only touchdown of the season so far to wide receiver Darnell Washinton and in total, went 13-of-20 for 117 yards.

Of course, this could be described as much ado about nothing in the sense that the Steelers’ quarterback situation is in no way different from what it was ahead of Week 2. That’s to say that at that time, Wilson was still chipping away at recovery following the calf injury that he sustained during training camp, and Fields was still the starter. As we now know, the Super Bowl winner was limited in practice during the entirety last week and as things stand, will not be a full participant when the Steelers begin to practice again on Wednesday. To that end, we can reasonably expect to see Fields in the middle once again. The Steelers will host the Chargers at Acrisure Stadium this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Don’t miss it!
