Russell Wilson may miss the chance to make his NFL debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, as the veteran quarterback deals with a calf issue.

“Trying to get my body ready”

The Steelers have listed Wilson as questionable for Sunday’s 2024 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Speaking on Friday, the 35-year-old said his calf had felt “a little tight” during final preparations for the Week 1 clash in Georgia, leading him to play only a limited part in practice.

“Obviously, we play the game on Sunday, I’m hoping I get to be in it […],” Wilson said, per Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley. “I’m trying to get my body ready to go and rock and roll. So, we’re doing everything we can.”

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has reported that Wilson’s understudy as Steelers quarterback, former Chicago Bears player Justin Fields, is likelier to start against the Falcons. “I always prepare like I’m a starter and you never know what can happen,” Fields said, according to Varley.

A nine-time Pro Bowler, Wilson joined the Steelers in March, signing a one-year contract worth a reported $1.21 million. A Super Bowl winner with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 season, the Ohio native is heading into his 13th campaign in the NFL.
