2023 US Open: Who plays today September 5? Match times for Tiafoe, Fritz, and Gauff
Fans will be able to enjoy another day of the best tennis, with four US players looking to progress in the tournament.
The US Open is entering its final stages and some of the favorites have made it to the last rounds of the event.
Attendants to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center facilities and fans watching around the world will be able to enjoy all the action on Day 9, as there are some mouthwatering clashes between some of the very best players in the ATP and WTA rankings.
The favorites made it through on Monday, as Carlos Alcaraz defeated Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets, the consistent Andrey Rublev beat Jack Draper in four and Daniil Medvedev came back from one set down to end up winning in four against Alex De Miñaur.
In the match of the day in the men’s category, Alexander Zverev got his hand raised in a great match against Jannik Sinner. The German, who lost the US Open final to Dominic Thiem in 2020, seems mentally ready to try to lift his first major and will face Alcaraz next.
As for women, the current Wimbledon titleholder Marketa Vondrousova defeated Peyton Stearns, while Madison Keys won the all-American battle against Jessica Pegula. The Chinese Qinwen Zheng made it to the semifinals by eliminating Ons Jabeur.
Zheng will now take on the No.1 favorite to lift the trophy, Aryna Sabalenka, who was just too strong for Daria Kasatkina (6-1, 6-3).
US Open: Day 9 matches
As the tournament advances and gets to its latest rounds, the number of games is decreasing, but that also translates into more quality games between top contenders.
Four games will be played on Tuesday, with Jelena Ostapenko taking on Cori Gauff in the first match of the day.
Later on, it will be Taylor Fritz’s turn, who will be taking on Novak Djokovic for the eighth time in his career. After losing all of their seven previous encounters, Fritz will be looking to play the best tennis of his life to finally defeat Djokovic.
Sorana Cirstea and Karolina Muchova will showcase the third game of the day, with Muchova, the current French Open runner-up being the favorite to get the win, while Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton will battle it out in the last match.
Ben Shelton is, like Alcaraz, 20 years old, but he has improved his game very quickly. On hard courts, his powerful game is tough to handle, as he proved against Tommy Paul, who was the favorite in their previous game. Tiafoe, meanwhile, has a golden opportunity to try to go all the way in the tournament after losing to Alcaraz in last year’s semifinals.
