The Northern Irishman is on track for a third consecutive championship and can only be caught by one man, South African golfer Thirston Lawrence. After the first day’s play, McIlroy is level with Tyrell Hatton on 5-under, while Lawrence is at 1-over.

The culmination of the Race to Dubai series, this week’s action features the tour’s top 50 ranked players in 2024, including European Ryder Cup stars Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Thorbjorn Olesen, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.

DP World Tour Championship prize money: how much does the winner get?

The above stars and others will be looking to finish the 2024 season on a high and clinch the $3 million first prize, which is part of a $10 million total purse, making the DP World Tour Championship the most lucrative event of the year.

As the final event of the season, this week’s championship will also determine the top 10 on the 2024 Race to Dubai, who will share a $6 million bonus.

$2 million of that will go the winner, which will almost certainly be McIlroy, with the second-placed finisher taking home $1 million and the man in 10th $150,000.
