Update:

The US’s Learner Tien will face French opposition in the next round of the 2025 Australian Open, after producing a shock win over Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles tournament.

Tien stuns Medvedev in five-set thriller

The world No. 121, Tien beat Medvedev in a five-set epic in Melbourne on Thursday, triumphing 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6, 7-6 to dump out the No. 5 seed in the second round.

Having won the first two sets, the 19-year-old qualifier had a match point in the third, but couldn’t convert it.

However, although Medvedev fought back to level the encounter on Margaret Court Arena, Tien prevailed in a deciding-set super tie-break to eliminate the Russian, who is a three-time finalist Down Under.

In his debut campaign at the Australian Open, Tien had earlier beaten Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli - also in five sets - in the first round on Tuesday.

“Harder than maybe it could have been...”

Speaking post-match, Tien said: “I was definitely hoping it wouldn’t go to a fifth-set breaker, [but I’m] just really happy to get a win.

“I know I made it a lot harder than maybe it could have been, but… you know, whatever.”

Who is Learner Tien’s next opponent at the 2025 Australian Open?

Tien will now move on to a third-round matchup with Corentin Moutet, who beat Tien’s fellow American Mitchell Krueger in the second round.

Moutet, ranked 69 in the world, will also be making his first ever appearance in the third round of the Australian Open men’s singles.

What is Learner Tien’s record against Corentin Moutet?

This will be Tien’s first ever meeting with Moutet on the ATP Tour.

When is Tien vs Moutet?

The organizers of the Australian Open are yet to announce the exact date and time of Tien and Moutet’s third-round clash. This article will update when match details have been confirmed.
