Alcaraz reveals his ‘dream’ goal in 2024
The Spanish superstar hopes to keep winning titles and have a successful year after winning Wimbledon in 2023.
Carlos Alcaraz wasn’t able to go all the way at the 2024 Australian Open, but he will be looking to retain his title at the Argentina Open, which is going underway in Buenos Aires until February 18.
The current world No. 2 is the tournament’s top seed and has a bye straight into the last 16. After playing in Argentina, Carlitos will travel to Brazil to participate in the Rio Open, where he got to last year’s final.
Besides looking to win these 250 and 500 ATP events, the Murcia native wants to get as far as he can in the big events and will try to make an impact during his US tour in Indian Wells and Miami.
The French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open are the most important tournaments in the ATP calendar left and the two-time major champion will try to win all of them, although this time Jannik Sinner will likely be his toughest opponent alongside Novak Djokovic in the fight for the titles.
Alcaraz says gold at the Paris Olympic Games is his main goal
While many fans would think that Alcaraz’s main objective this year would be winning the French Open, the 20-year-old talent has a different priority.
Alcaraz, who wasn’t able to become champion in Paris after losing to Djokovic due to injury, admitted that he prefers to win the gold medal at this year’s Paris Olympic Games than lifting a Grand Slam tournament title in 2024.
“I would say the Olympic title. For me, it is a dream to bring a medal to my country, to Spain, and winning gold is one of the greatest things that can happen to you in the world of sport in general”, he said to the press in Buenos Aires.
“This year, if you gave me a choice, I would say that I will keep the Olympic gold... although I would like to win both”, he added.
After saying he would choose to emerge victorious in the Summer Olympics rather than winning another major, he explained that he’s always looking to win all the trophies, stating that he’s a very competitive player:
“I’m a very competitive, very ambitious guy. I always want to win everything, it is what drives me to continue training at my highest level, to continue going to the tournaments with a lot of desire to get more titles”.
Asked about who his main opponents will be this year, Juan Carlos Ferrero’s player mentioned three names.
“I think Djokovic and Sinner are the rivals to beat. There is no doubt, both for me and for everyone. Zverev also has the winning head-to-head against me, he is a rival that I have very much in mind, but I do think that Djokovic and Sinner are at the top right now”, he concluded.
The Buenos Aires Open will be the first competitive tournament for the Spaniard since the Australian Open. He will be in action on Wednesday against either Juan Pablo Varillas or qualifier Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
