The 2024 Formula 1 season is on the horizon, with some format changes. Free practice and sprint qualifying will now take place on Friday, with the sprint race as Saturday’s first track event, followed by the qualifying race. Reigning champion Max Verstappen heads into the new season as the bookies favorite to retain his world crown. His main rivals will once again be Lewis Hamilton, entering his final season with Mercedes and Lando Norris, who will be racing for McClaren.

F1 race calendar expanded for 2024

The program has been extended to 24 races with the return of the Chinese Grand Prix after a five-year absence. Silverstone hosts the British Grand Prix and will continue to do so for the next decade after signing an historic new, multi-year extension with Formula 1 last week.

Pre-season testing will take place at the 5.412-kilometre Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir with the first official race set for the following week at the same circuit. Six Sprint weekends have been lined up - at the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, United States, São Paulo and Qatar races.

Las Vegas GP late start

The Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix returns for a second year - with the race to take place over 50 laps at the Strip Circuit on Saturday 23/Sunday 24 November. Another late start time in Vegas - 10 p.m. local time or 1 a.m. for viewers in other parts of the States. Once again the Russian Grand Prix will not feature as part of the calendar - the contract was terminated in 2022 as a consequence of the invasion of Ukraine.

The F1 2024 driver line-up remains unchanged from last year and the 20-driver starting grid that will line up in Bahrain on 2 March will be the same as the one that finished 2023 at the Abu Dhabi GP.

Car manufacturers have also been gearing up for the new season. Aston Martin launched their new AMR24, ironing out several technical issues and correcting weaknesses in the previous model and today Ferrari followed suit by unveiling their SF-24 car. Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur told reporters in Tuesday’s official launch: “Presenting a new car to the world for the first time is always a very exciting moment for me and the drivers, even if we are all already thinking about the moment we will go head-to-head with our rivals on track. This year, we must start off where we left off at the end of last season, when we were consistent front runners, with a view to constantly improving in all areas”.
