Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be returning to his homeland for a fight for the first time in 12 years. On Monday, the Mexican boxer announced that his next fight will take place in Gudalajara in May of this year. Governor of the state of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, was a part of the social media video that announced the news.

“We are celebrating 200 years of freedom and sovereignty. A story written by men and women who fought for two centuries to lay the ground for this nation. Today we honor our past through those who presently give a good name to the state of Jasilco,” said the governor of Cancelo’s home state.

Alavarez followed up Alfaro’s declaration by saying, “That is why I am ready to return home and defend my titles in the place where I was born and my story began, with the people who have always supported me . In May of this year, I will fight for Jalisco and celebrate with you the greatness of our land. See you soon”.

Enrique Alfaro then declared: “Jalisco is celebrating and the greatest Mexican boxer of all time joins this great celebration”. And finally, both came together for a final message, “We are Jalisco, 200 years free and sovereign.”

No details have been released concerning the exact date, the rival or the venue where the event will take place. Talk over the last few days suffest that the fight will happen on the 6th of May, at the Jalisco Stadium, since it’s the largest venue in the state. Akron Stadium and Tres de Marzo Stadim have also been considered.

One of the major issues addressed in the negotiations, according to close sources, is the eventual participation of Atlas in the playoffs for the 2023 Clausura Tournament of Liga MX. In the event that the ' Foxes’ qualify and they could have to host a match at home, it would have to be played on Sunday the 7th of May just hours after the fight.

Saúl Álvarez has not fought in Jalisco since 2011. Canelo defeated Matthew Hatton by unanimous decision and was proclaimed Super Welterweight world champion for the first time in March of that year. Months later, on June 18th, he made his first defense of his title and decided to do so on his home soil. That fight happened at VFG Arena and he defeated Ryan Rhodes by technical KO in the twelfth round. That was the last time he entered a ring in Guadalajara.
