Update:

The Las Vegas Raiders were looking for a new quarterback and found one before the next NFL season begins. The team from the “Sin City” agreed to send a 2025 third-round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Geno Smith, according to multiple reports.

This means Smith will reunite with Pete Carroll in Las Vegas. The two previously worked together in Seattle during the 2022 and 2023 seasons after Russell Wilson left the Seahawks. Carroll departed from the Washington-based team before the 2024 season and is now in charge of the Raiders.

Las Vegas needed a quarterback after moving on from Gardner Minshew and Desmond Ridder. Defensive star Maxx Crosby even lobbied for Aaron Rodgers to join the team in Nevada.

During his time as Seattle’s starting quarterback, Smith won the Comeback Player of the Year award in 2022. The West Virginia alum played in 54 regular-season games for the NFC West team, amassing 12,961 yards with 76 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

What will the Seahawks do at quarterback?

By trading Smith to Las Vegas, the Seahawks are left with only Sam Howell, Jaren Hall, and John Rhys Plumlee under contract. Unfortunately, none of them are considered reliable starting options in the NFL.

There are plenty of free-agent options, including Aaron Rodgers, Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Jacoby Brissett. However, the team has limited cap space, with only $38.6 million available, ranking them 20th in the league in that category.

The draft is always an option for developing talent, but by the time the Seahawks pick at No. 18 in the first round, top prospects like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders will likely be off the board. Later on, they could target Will Howard or Dillon Gabriel, but neither seems poised to make an immediate impact.
