Carlos Alcaraz wins Tokyo title, chases down all-time tennis record
The world No. 1 claims his eighth trophy of 2025 and keeps alive his bid to match the single-season record of tournament wins.

Carlos Alcaraz kept his red-hot streak alive by defeating American Taylor Fritz to capture the Japan Open in Tokyo and claim his eighth title of 2025 and the 24th of his career.
The 22-year-old Spaniard avenged his recent Laver Cup loss to Fritz in convincing fashion, winning 6-4, 6-4 and breaking serve three times while surrendering just one break himself.
What is the men’s record for most tournament wins in a year?
Alcaraz is now 8-2 in finals this year with three major events still ahead: the Masters 1000 tournaments in Shanghai and Paris and the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. The world’s top-ranked player will be favored at all three, giving him a legitimate shot at becoming only the fifth man in tennis history to win 10 or more titles in a single season.
Unsurprisingly, Roger Federer (12 in 2006, 11 in 2004 and 2005), Rafael Nadal (11 in 2005, 10 in 2013) and Novak Djokovic (11 in 2015, 10 in 2011) headline the exclusive list of players to reach double digits. The fourth member may be a surprise to many: Austria’s Thomas Muster, who matched Federer’s all-time record of 12 in 1995, with 11 of those victories coming on his preferred clay courts.
Alcaraz schedule could decide history
Whether Alcaraz can join that elite group will depend partly on how he fills out the rest of his calendar. Barring injury, he is set to play Shanghai, Paris and the ATP Finals, but he would need at least one more appearance to reach 12 titles. That could mean entering either the Erste Bank Open in Vienna or the Swiss Indoors in Basel, both ATP 500 events scheduled for the third week in October.
World No. 1 joins another elite club
By winning in Tokyo, Alcaraz also became the sixth player this century to capture at least eight tournaments in a single season, joining Federer (four times), Nadal (three), Djokovic (twice), Andy Murray (nine in 2016) and Jannik Sinner (eight in 2024).
With his current form and a packed fall schedule, Alcaraz has positioned himself to turn an already dominant season into one for the record books.
