Crawford on the Spence fight rumors: “It’s April Fools!”

Both fighters were expected to finally fight in June, according to the most recent reports, but Bud shut down the fans’ hopes on social media.

Update:
Both fighters were expected to finally fight in June, according to the most recent reports, but Bud shut down the fans’ hopes on social media.

When almost everyone didn’t think about a Terence Crawford-Errol Spence super fight happening anytime soon, a potential clash between both champions was brought to the table once again.

Over the last few hours, boxing fans were boosted by The Ring’s news of a massive fight between Crawford, the WBO welterweight champion, and Spence, the unified 147-pound king, in a unification bout scheduled for June 17 that had been in the making for years.

Reports said that the undisputed championship clash would be announced during the April 22nd mega-bout between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia.

However, it seemed too good to be true, and the Omaha native fighter shut down any possibility of the fight taking place anytime soon by letting everyone know on social media. “It’s April Fools!”, he wrote on his Twitter account.

Spence vs Crawford: a fight that may never happen

While both American fighters offer another intriguing soap opera chapter to the boxing community, the truth is that time is ticking and it doesn’t favor any of them.

They still are at a good moment in their careers to finally meet each other inside the ring, but if time keeps going by with no progress, chances of seeing them fight will drop considerably.

Both boxers have been asking for huge amounts of money to make the fight happen, but even if it’s a highly-anticipated matchup, they are not pay-per-view superstars and they haven’t faced top opposition for a while, which translated into a risk for promoters.

Unlike fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Álvarez, or Gervonta Davis, Spence and Crawford don’t possess as much charisma and explosiveness as them, and that reflects on their numbers when it comes to a PPV event.
