On Wednesday, there was yet another chapter written in the saga of the showdown between Canelo Álvarez and Óscar de la Hoya. The Golden Boy criticized his former fighter, telling Canelo that he should show respect toward the company that built the undisputed super middleweight’s career.

Canelo then responded with a vulgar tirade referring to de la Hoya as a “thief” and an “asshole.” The boxing world had a wide array of reactions to this encounter, among them David Benavidez, one of Golden Boy Promotions’ stable of fighters, who many fans see as Canelo’s true heir apparent.

In an Instagram story from his account, Benavidez wrote, “Put some fucken (sic) respect on @oscardelahoya name!!!” This was attached to a video that Benavidez uploaded of the promoter pointing out that Golden Boy was fundamental in building Canelo’s career.

Benavidez awaits his opportunity

While Canelo hopes to solidify his legacy on Saturday, May 4 against Jaime Munguía, Benavidez will move up to 175lbs to face the Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim light heavyweight title in June.

Despite this, Benavidez is still pushing for a bout with Canelo, despite the fact that Canelo’s camp indicates that they are leaning toward a fight with Edgar Berlanga in September.

“If I have nothing to offer you, why are you asking for $150-200 million to fight someone who is worthless? Hopefully after you win that money you will have enough left over to buy a couple of eggs,” said Benavidez back in March.
