Eight-time PGA Tour winner reveals key update on health and potential time out the game
Hip injuries can cause major problems for professionals and the Florida-born golfer is taking some time away from the game.
Last September Billy Horschel became the first American golfer to win the BMW PGA Championship twice, making an eagle putt to defeat Rory McIlroy in a dramatic playoff win.
Horschel has now racked up eight wins on the PGA Tour, in addition to another four triumphs on the European Tour and elsewhere. In 2022 he was ranked as high as 11th in the world but he is now forced to take a break due to an upcoming surgery on his right hip.
The 38-year-old announced the news in a video posted on X on Tuesday, describing it as a “preventative measure”.
“After consulting with doctors and my team, I have decided to have right hip surgery early next week out in Colorado,” Horschel said.
“It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure. I’m already itching to start rehab, get back to practicing, and I look forward to returning to the course sometime around late summer/early fall.”
Despite underlying injury concerns, Horschel put in a string of impressive performances in 2024. He finished eighth at the PGA Championship and was runner-up at The Open Championship, pushing eventual winner Xande Schauffele all the way. Now, Horschel is full of optimism for what the future may bring.
“I did a lot of great things that I can take on to the next few years of majors, and hopefully one of these will be my time to step through the door and hold one of them,” he added.
