This Saturday, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez returns to the T-Mobile ring in Las Vegas to face Jermell Charlo, who is in the best moment of his career. Both come to the fight with the status of undisputed champions, although the Mexican is a clear favorite for the betting houses.

Canelo is probably, along with Gervonta Davis and the three big heavyweight stars (Fury, Joshua, and Wilder), the most important media figure in the world of boxing. This means that he is also one of the highest-paid boxers on the planet, without a doubt.

Not only does Canelo get richer with each fight thanks to his image, but his opponents also benefit financially. His rivals have a reason to celebrate just by facing the Mexican fighter due to the large amount of money involved. Each round of the super middleweight champion leads to benefits through advertising and PPVs that help increase his opponent’s earnings.

How much can Jermell Charlo earn?

The champion’s history

According to the Sports Payouts portal, Charlo took home a guaranteed purse of $430,000 against Erickson Lubin in 2017. In the first fight with Tony Harrison, which he lost in 2018, Charlo won $750,000. In the rematch a year later, where he regained the WBC super welterweight title, Charlo took home his first guaranteed million-dollar purse.

When he fought Brian Castano to a draw in 2020, Charlo had a guaranteed purse of $1 million. Total Sportal reported that Charlo would receive another $1 million purse, with the purse split 60/40 for a total of $3 million.

Estimated sum for Charlo at the end

According to experts in this type of contract, the fight could have been concluded with prize money of nearly $50 million and sponsorships and percentages from PPV that are yet to be finalized. Typically, the big star gets a 70/30 split in such fights, which means Charlo could earn about $20 million.

Calculating this data accurately is impossible until the fight is over. There may be various clauses, such as bonuses for victory or rounds, which can affect the distribution of the total amount between the boxers. Moreover, there could have been an unusual distribution on this occasion that altered the distribution of the total amount.
