How much prize money did J.J. Spaun win at the 2025 U.S. Open?
J.J. Spaun won his fist major championship of his career by going birdie-birdie in the final two holes to finish with a final round 72 from Oakmont.

It was a sloppy, soggy weekend from Oakmont Country Club, but when the clouds cleared and the dust settled it was J.J. Spaun who was lifting US Open trophy late Sunday afternoon.
Sensational finish for Spaun
Spaun came into the final round seven back of the at -3, one back of Sam Burns who was the leader after Saturday. The LA native got off to a nightmare start to his final 18 holes, bogeying five of his first six holes. He got a mix of terrible lies in the infamous Oakmost round and horrendous luck. On the second hole he stuck an approach shot too tight to the flag. It bounced of the stick and ended up off the green.

He would settle down as he closed out the front nine but a rain delay would interrupt play from Pennsylvania, and that seemed to ignite Spaun for the final stretch of his round. While players like Burns and Adam Scott faded down the leaderboard after the stoppage, Spaun locked in until the finish line.
Robert McIntyre spent about an hour as the leader in the club house at +1, but that wouldn’t be enough to hold off Spaun. He took the lead, reaching even par in the tournament on the 17th hole with a birdie after driving the green, and then ended it with a bang with an incredible 65 foot birdie putt to seal his first major championship.
Spaun takes home largest major prize
Not only was it his first major, but it was only his second win on tour. With the win, he takes home the US Open title, but he takes home the $4.3 million dollar winner’s check.

“Our purse is $21.5 million. Winner’s check is $4.3 million. We didn’t raise our purse this year,” USGA CEO Mike Whan said. “When I started at the USGA just four years ago, our purse was $12.5 million, so I feel comfortable that we’ve been a leader in moving fast and bigger. [...] We want the money to be commensurate with the achievement,” said USGA CEO Mark Whan.
The $21.5 million purse is the biggest of any of the majors. The Masters shelled out $21 million, the PGA Championship has a $19 million purse and last year’s Open Championship had a total pay out of $17 million. The PGA Championship remains the tournament with the biggest purse at $25 million and the richest winner’s check of 4.5 million.
