How much prize money does the winner get at the 2024 American Express tournament?
OWGR world No.1 Scottie Scheffler starts out as the big favorite to win the Desert Classic which boasts a relatively modest purse.
There’s a lot of money to be made this year on the PGA Tour as the regular season gets underway in La Quinta, California on Thursday. The 2024 American Express will be different from previous editions in that it will be played on three courses rather than one. La Quinta Country Club hosts the event for the 49th time with players teeing off simultaneously at PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament Course) and the Pete Dye Stadium Course. All three courses share a par-72 layout and measure under 7,200 yards.
The favorites
Some of the names to look out for include OWGR world No.1 and PGA Tour Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler, Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and former World Amateur No.1 Patrick Cantlay. Also making a return to the fairway is Daniel Berger who spent a year and a half away from the game recovering from a disc issue to his lower back.
All in all, 22 of the world’s 50 top-ranked players will be taking part at this year’s AmEx in a full field of 156 pro players. Masters champion Jon Rahm, currently signed up with LIV Golf, is one of the notable absentees.
Cash prizes
The 2024 AmEx purse stands at $8.4 million. The winner will receive a $1.512 million cut with second place taking a $915,600 cash prize and $579,600 for third. In comparison to other PGA Tour events, the American Express tournament boasts a relatively modest purse - there are many more lucrative events during the 2024. The $1.512 million top cash prize is a drop in the ocean compared to the $4.5 million on offer in March’s Players Championship, which has a purse of $25 million.
Cash prizes at the 2024 American Express tournament are staggered right the way down from 1 to 90, with the smallest prize at $13,860.
