Can McIlroy end major hoodoo?
McIlroy is a four-time major winner, but the 35-year-old has never triumphed at the Masters - and hasn’t tasted victory in any of the big-four tournaments since winning the PGA Championship in August 2014.
As noted by PGATour.com’s Sean Martin, 2014’s PGA Championship was the last time McIlroy had an outright lead heading into the final round of a major.
Since lifting the Wanamaker Trophy over a decade ago, the world No. 2 has endured a number of painful near misses - the most recent of which came at the 2024 U.S. Open, when it was DeChambeau who pipped him to the title.
And McIlroy has led outright before Masters Sunday before. In 2011, he took a four-stroke advantage into the final round, only to score 80 and end up in a tie for 15th place, 10 shots behind winner Charl Schwartzel.
“I know what can happen on the final day here”
“I still have to remind myself that there’s a long way to go,” McIlroy said after yesterday’s third round, per Reuters, adding: “I, just as much as anyone else, know what can happen on the final day here.
“I came in here talking about being the most complete version of myself as a golfer, and you know, I just have to keep reminding myself of that and remind myself that no matter what situation or scenario I find myself in tomorrow, I’ll be able to handle it.”
He concluded: “I’m just going to have to settle in and really try to keep myself in my own little bubble and keep my head down and, you know, sort of approach tomorrow with the same attitude that I have tried to approach the last three days with.”
DeChambeau, meanwhile, said he’s relishing the challenge of chasing down McIlroy to beat him to another major title.

“It will be a fun test”
“I think it’s fun, feeling like you have to hit every single shot to the best of your ability, and you can’t let off the gas pedal,” the 31-year-old said, per Reuters. “You just have to focus and play the best - absolute best golf you possibly can.
“When you’re leading, it’s a little different. I’ve had those times, as well. You attack that a little differently. But for me, I’ll be chasing tomorrow. It will be a fun test.”
