The Zurich Classic employs a unique tournament format, wherein the field of 160 players is divided into 80 two-person teams. The top 80 golfers in the PGA Tour rankings get to choose their playing partner, and all participants must either hold PGA Tour playing status or be selected as a sponsor’s exemption.

During the Zurich Classic, the 80 two-person teams compete in a fourball format during the opening round. Each player plays their ball, and the best score on each hole from the pair determines the team score. For the second round, the tournament format switches to foursomes play.

2023 Zurich Classic prize money

The 2023 Zurich Classic is the 27th PGA Tour event of the season and boasts a total prize purse of $8.6 million. Per the tour’s standard prize money distribution chart, the victorious team will receive $2,485,400, divided equally among teammates, as the usual 18 percent winner’s payout. The winners will receive the most considerable portion of the $8.6 million prize purse, while the runners-up will take home $1,014,800. The team finishing third place will win $664,350, while the fourth-placed finishers will earn $559,000.

Out of the 80-team field, the top 33 teams and ties will receive a payout after the 36-hole cut. The team finishing in 33rd place on the leaderboard will receive $35,948 as compensation for their performance.

Apart from the prize money, both players on the winning team will receive a two-year winner’s exemption on the PGA Tour, granting them eligibility to participate in events such as the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The Players Championship, and next month’s PGA Championship.

Teams that make the cut will be awarded FedExCup points and prize money, with each team member receiving an equal share of the final position’s payout.
