Is Djokovic going to take Kyrgios to dinner after winning Wimbledon? Are they friends?
Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon Final to secure his seventh title on grass. The two had a deal the winner would buy dinner or drinks.
Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios met at Center Court for the Finals from the All England Club, and it was the Serbian who took home his seventh Wimbledon title. There will double delight for the Djoker who didn’t only win back-to-back titles for the third time this decade, but may have a new buddy on tour after everything is said and done.
Kyrgios has been accused of bullying opponents
Nick Kyrgios is known for being one of the most villanized figures on the tour for his not-too-subtile on court rants, underhand serves and some times over the top intimidation tactics that opponents, like Stefanos Tsitsipas, aren’t a big fan.
While the Aussie and Novak have had their ups and downs, it seems like they are on the mend after their meeting in the Final at Wimbledon. The two went back and forth on social media in the days before the championship with some friendly banter that could lead to dinner, drinks or disco.
According to Kyrgios, the opponents used to be friends a few years back. In an interview back in January, he said they media had a lot to do with them falling out of favor with each other.
Nick stood up for Nole in Australia
Their relationship wasn’t always on such amicable of terms. Kyrgios was quoted numerous times going after Djokovic, calling the 21 time Grand Slam champion a “tool,” claiming the Serbian would never the best in eyes and hitting out at the mid-pandemic tournaments Nole held at the height of the Covid peak.
The narrative suddenly turned for the Australian this year after Djokovic was prohibited from playing in the Australian Open because of his refusal to get the Covid vaccination. Kyrgios criticized the organizers of the Grand Slam on his home soil saying how “bad” the Djokovic situation was handled.
Since then Kyrgios says they have developed a bit of a “bromance.” While Djokovic didn’t use the word bromance, he did say “we definitely have a better relationship than what it was probably prior to January this year.”
Dinner and drinks still pending
Djokovic came under heavy scrutiny from much of the tennis world, but in the end he stuck to his convictions, and Kyrgios went from having “no respect” for the Serbian to being one of his only allies throughout the early part of the tennis season.
‘When it was really tough for me in Australia, he was one of the very few players that came out publicly and supported me and stood by me,’ Djokovic said.
It remains to be seen if the two Wimbledon finalists will actually meet up as they agreed to on Instagram. While the get together won’t be immediate, Djokovic said “This is a start of a wonderful relationship between us off the court as well. I didn’t respond to the (nightclub invitation) as my wife was sitting next to me. Let’s start with dinner and drinks and let’s see.”
