Juan Carlos Ferrero opens up on Carlos Alcaraz split: “I stayed true to my values”
Ferrero has revealed he hasn’t spoken to Alcaraz since their split, which took him completely by surprise.

On Dec. 17, the tennis world was stunned when Carlos Alcaraz and coach Juan Carlos Ferrero announced they were going their separate ways after a record-breaking year together. Since then, the two sides have taken very different approaches publicly.
Alcaraz, the reigning world No. 1, and his camp have largely stayed silent, aside from brief remarks from his father, who said, “Everyone is free to give an opinion based on what they know.”
Ferrero, by contrast, has chosen to explain his side of what many viewed as a baffling sporting decision.
The Valencia native previously called the split “sad news for tennis” and said he felt genuine sorrow about how things ended. On Friday night, he returned to the subject on Radiogaceta de los Deportes, acknowledging that while questions remain, the root cause was contractual disagreements.
Ferrero “still processing what happened”
Asked how he is coping personally, Ferrero said the reality is still sinking in.
“Each day that passes, you process it a little more,” he said. “Despite it being sad news for everyone, you gradually come to terms with it. It surprised everyone, but you have to accept it as soon as possible. I’ve received so many messages of support. I think people have recognized the work that was done and the legacy that was left behind. That part leaves me very calm, and honestly, surprised.”
Contract talks and personal principles
Ferrero was clear that the final decision was made remotely and centered on the terms of a new contract.
“I wasn’t comfortable with certain things I saw in the new contract,” he explained. “I made that clear, and we couldn’t reach an agreement. I’m faithful to my values and my way of thinking. There are certain things I couldn’t accept, given who I am. I’m satisfied with that decision, though not with the fact that I broke up with Carlos, because that’s not what I wanted.”
No warning signs of split
Ferrero admitted he never imagined the partnership would end after their last goodbye in Bologna, where Alcaraz was sidelined from the Davis Cup by a hamstring issue.
“I didn’t expect it at all,” he said. “The year had gone very well. I didn’t have any arguments with him or with his team. The contract is renewed every year, sometimes with small changes, and until now we had always reached an agreement.”
No contact between Ferrero and Alcaraz
Ferrero also confirmed he has not spoken with his former player since the news became official.
“For now, we haven’t talked,” he said. “He needs to be calm, let some time pass, and focus on training so things can settle down. Later on, I’ll get in touch so we can talk and make sure everything is absolutely fine.”
Samuel López takes over with Alcaraz
Looking back, Ferrero said the long-term plan with Alcaraz was to continue growing both on and off the court. He suggested that bringing Samuel López into the coaching setup had been important to add fresh perspectives.
“When relationships last a long time, there’s a bit of wear and tear,” Ferrero said. “That’s why Samu’s arrival was important, to refresh ideas and keep moving in the same direction. During those weeks when Samu took over, everything felt lighter. I came back energized, and it was good for Carlos too.”
Ferrero also expressed confidence in López, a coach he trusts, taking over the project full-time.
“I want my relationship with Samu to stay exactly the same,” he said. “At first, it’s a little hard to accept that someone so close to you stays on the team. That takes time. But he has enough experience to be alone with Carlos. Maybe after a long stretch on the road, they’ll decide to bring in another coach so he can also take a breather.”
Ferrero leaves door open for Alcaraz reunion
Ferrero made it clear he is not ruling out a reunion with Alcaraz down the line and strongly defended both the player and his support system.
“Carlos isn’t going to lose his way,” he said. “The people around him tell him things straight. At 22, you can make certain mistakes due to lack of experience. I like to think he won’t lose his direction, because I know him. He knows what’s good for him and what isn’t. I think he’ll stay on the right path. He loves competing, playing tournaments, and fighting for titles.”
Australian Open and Ferrero’s next steps
Ferrero admitted the timing is less than ideal with the Australian Open approaching, but he has no doubts about Alcaraz’s readiness.
“It’s not ideal,” he said, “but in terms of tennis, talent, and mentally, he’s more than prepared to win the tournament.”
As for his own future, Ferrero said rest comes first after seven intense years.
“I need to rest,” he said. “I want to spend time at home with my family and disconnect. Then I’ll see if projects come along that truly motivate me.”
