LIV Golf has just become official. With 48 golf players forming the body of the Saudi-financed series, the tour will be renamed the ‘LIV Golf League’ for the upcoming season. Additionally, they just revealed their expansion plans for 2023.

LIV League expands to 14 tournaments

LIV league will feature a 14-event schedule promoting the 48 contracted players separated into 12 teams of four on “established team franchises” and a system of promotion and relegation through its series of Asian Tour events. Once these teams are established, they will remain the same throughout. That’s a change from the previous format, where teams changed for each event.

Backed by a $300 million investment that is referred to as ‘blood money by some, LIV Golf will help deliver a total of 25 tournaments worldwide in hopes to “maximize our beloved sport’s true potential,” as per CEO Greg Norman.

LIV Golf made the announcement on Wednesday as they prepare for their third event of the year at the former US president’s Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

LIV Golf is committed to making sustainable investments that grow the game now and for the future, and we are proud to turn these dreams into a reality,” shared Norman.

LIV Golf purse expands

While prize money at each individual event is almost the same as it’s been in 2022, the total money available will significantly increase because of the new expanded schedule. There will be $405 million in prize purses across the 14 events. The key components separating LIV from the PGA Tour will still remain: Shotgun starts and 54-hole events with no cut.

Even though the full schedule is yet to be announced, LIV has pledged that its events will not take place at the same time as major championships, international team events or heritage events.
