Natasha Jonas vs Mikaela Mayer: The lay of the land

Natasha Jonas and Mikaela Mayer meet this weekend in what promises to be a solid and most definitely entertaining matchup to kick off the women’s boxing main-event schedule for 2024. At 19-1-0, 5KOs, Mayer comes into this one on the back of a significant jump in the weight class. Before this bout, the Englishwoman was fighting at super-featherweight, a period that ended with a loss to Alycia Baumgardner in 2022. The 39-year-old spent 2023 bulking up, even taking an interim title fight at 130lbs, followed by a catchweight 142lbs fight, however, Jonas represents her first top-tier opponent since the defeat.

Yet, don’t mistake the jump in weight as an indication that Mayer will be physically outmatched. Jonas is actually the shorter of the two and with a record of 14-2-1, 9KOs has less experience, though a solid punch. What’s more is that the American has actually fought at super-featherweight herself, before going toe-for-toe with Katie Taylor in the division above, just prior to making the jump to super-welter. Since then she has taken three belts, before dropping to welter last summer where she took the belt that she will now defend. This one is going to be good.
