PGA Championship tee times: Round 1 groupings on Thursday
Scheffler, McIlroy, DeChambeau headline early action as golf’s elite clash at Quail Hollow.
Thursday sees the first round of the 2025 PGA Championship get underway and the big guns are out to battle. Held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, this second major of the year has a number of narratives running through it, most notably, a chance for the Masters-unburdened Rory McIlroy to double up.
What time does McIlroy tee off at the PGA Day 1?
McIlroy will tee off at 8:22 a.m. ET from the 10th tee (more on that in a moment), in arguably the most anticipated trio of the day: McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Tasty or what?
McIlroy, fresh off completing the career grand slam at Augusta, has already won at Quail Hollow four times, which gives him more than a leg up on Scheffler, who’s only played the course once – at the 2022 Presidents Cup. Still, you don’t get to be world No. 1 by being course-shy.
‘What about Bryson DeChambeau?,’ I hear you ask. He’s playing later, at 1:47 p.m. ET from the first tee, alongside Viktor Hovland and Gary Woodland. DeChambeau has top-10 finishes in four of the last five majors, and he lifted the trophy at the 2024 U.S. Open – the last time a major was played in North Carolina. He’s no sideshow.
More eye-catching PGA groupings for Round 1
If that morning trio wasn’t enough, the afternoon shift is practically a mini-major of its own. Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson are out at 1:14 p.m. ET, just ahead of Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Åberg and Patrick Reed at 1:25 p.m.
Thomas, by the way, won the last PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow in 2017. Spieth is eyeing the same rare feat McIlroy just pulled off: the career slam.
How the tee times work at the PGA Championship
You’re likely already familiar with the tee situation alluded to above but if not, let me explain. We have split tees for the first two rounds, meaning that threesomes go off from both the first and tenth tees, starting as early as 7 a.m. and stretching through the early afternoon. And while the morning could still be a little damp, Thursday’s forecast looks clear, meaning conditions could play faster as the day goes on.
