For the world’s best players, a career in golf is a hugely lucrative one that can rival the earnings of nearly any athlete in the world.

Last year, Scottie Scheffler earned an incredible $76.3 million in prize money, while picking up a further $28 million from endorsements. But for most players on the PGA Tour, a nine-figure income is completely unrealistic.

That point was made clear by a recent post from James Nicholas, the 28-year-old who finished T-61 at last week’s U.S. Open. Nicholas was competing at the event for the first time and he put in a creditable performance, but in a video posted on Instagram he broke down his earnings from the week.

Nicholas’ T-61 finish was worth $43,544 in prize money, a career-best for the young American. He took a share of the huge $21.5 million prize purse that was on offer at this year’s competition.

But he also had a number of expenses, including roughly $3,500 to pay his caddie for the week. He also had to pay for groceries while at the competition. club world

Going through the qualifying rounds cost him more than $2,000 in flights, accommodation and entry fees. However he also received a number of gifts and courtesy rental car from the US Open.

Perhaps most impressively of all, his sponsors were able to contribute to pay for various things across the weekend. One was even able to fly him and his family back home in a private jet, a big perk for Nicholas’ first-ever Major appearance.

“Definitely a bigger purse than your average Korn Ferry event,” Nicholas said in the video talking through the week’s finances. “Wish I had played a bit better on the weekend but will build off it.”

He continued: “What an incredible week. A dream come true to play in my first U.S. Open and throw out a first pitch at an MLB game. Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and for all of the kind messages.
