Rory McIlroy is the champion of FedEx Cup Tour Championship after shooting final round 66 at East Lake Golf Club. The Northern Irishman finished the weekend at -21, securing his third Tour Championship of his career.

McIlroy holds off worlds No. 1

McIlroy made his move on Saturday when he shot a seven-under, 63 to place himself in the final group on Sunday. He was paired with the world’s number one ranked golfer Scott Scheffler who came into the tournament with a two shot lead and stretched it out to six strokes on Saturday.

A bogey on the first hole didn’t deter McIlroy from rattling off four birdies on the front nine. Scheffler had a bogey on three of the first six holes, and fell out of the running with his final round 73.

FedEx Cup purse the largest in Tour history

Korean Sungjae Im had the momentary lead late on Sunday, but a double bogey on 14 set him back. His final round 66 came up a stroke short of McIlroy’s -21 for the weekend.

The 33 year old takes home a record setting $18 million after finishing first in the final PGA tournament of the season. The total purse was $58 million, split between 29 golfers. It was originally supposed to be split between 30 golfers, but Will Zalatoris had to drop out due to injury.

McIlroy hasn’t won a major since 2014, but won the FedEx Cup Championship in 2016 and 2019. With his win on Sunday, McIlory takes home the most lucrative prize in the history of the Tour. The $18 million check is three times as much as Jack Nicklaus’ entire career earnings.
