Saúl Canelo Álvarez is on the road to becoming the pound-for-pound boxing king in the world, but he suffered a setback last weekend after losing to Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Mexican boxer said he wants revenge in September and negotiations are set to start in the upcoming weeks with Bivol’s camp.

Canelo amongst the highest paid athletes

Álvarez doesn’t like losing and he promised to come back stronger than ever for his next fight. It is not all bad news for the Mexican superstar because according to Sportico, Canelo is the fifth highest paid athlete in the world.

On Tuesday, Sportico revealed the top 100 athletes playing in 10 different sports and Álvarez earned $89 million during the past 12 months from his previous fights. This is good news for Canelo because last year he was down seven places.

Canelo earned $84 million from fighting and $5 million from sponsorships. He surpassed superstars like Stephen Curry (NBA), Kevin Durant (NBA), Roger Federer (tennis), James Harden (NBA) and Tiger Woods (golf).
