Sinner’s coach reveals worrying reasons behind player’s tremors: “He was white as a sheet”
The Italian was pale and suffering uncontrollable tremors throughout his round of 16 match against Holger Rune.

With a towel around his face and unable to control the movement of his upper limbs, Jannik Sinner was a concerning sight for fans during his Round of 16 match against Holger Rune at the recent Australian Open.
The world number one ultimately won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and went on to win the season-opening Grand Slam. However, he kept his post-match comments as brief as possible, despite requiring medical attention for 11 minutes to check his temperature and vital signs.
Sinner struck down by virus in Melbourne
“They checked him on the court, and the umpire said he needed further checks, to make sure he was all right,” Rune explained afterwards. “Then he came back firing, so I don’t know what they did.”
The Italian’s coach, Darren Cahill, has now revealed what happened: “He was pretty bad. We didn’t know if he was going to step on the court. It was that bad. We knew from the day before he wasn’t feeling great, so he got to bed early.
“We cancelled his practice, I think he was scheduled to play at about 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon, in the heat of the day. We had a warm-up booked for the morning and cancelled that and moved it back to midday, and when he turned up to the courts he looked as white as a sheet.
“We cancelled all the practices, went to the doctor, they gave him some gels to get the energy up. He rested up, he took an ice bath to get him going and we threw him on to the court cold”.
Jannik Sinner has overcome a huge physical battle to win through to the quarterfinals. The top seed prevailed after stumbling his way around the court, now setting up a potential showdown with Alex de Minaur. https://t.co/5zYfOfGqUb @laura_spurway #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/nE9fYCdPAF

“He was fortunate to have been able to go to the dressing room to be attended to in the third set,” The coach continued. “That’s when he was worse, they wanted to monitor his vital signs and couldn’t, so they took him inside. He had about ten minutes of rest, and when he returned, he had regained color in his face and seemed to be in better condition”.
After overcoming his physical problems to eliminate Tune, Sinner went on to see off Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton before defeating Alexander Zverev in the final to lift the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup trophy for the second year running.
