Update:

American golfer J. J. Spaun turned professional back in 2012 and has been on the PGA Tour since the 2016/17 season.

For much of that time he was a bit of a journeyman on the tour, never breaking the top 20 at a Major. That all changed last weekend when Spaun dealt the best with the tricky Oakmont conditions to clinch a shock U. S. Open victory.

Speaking after the win, Spaun admitted: “Last year in June, I was looking like I was going to lose my job, and that was when I had that moment where, if this is how I go out, I might as well go down swinging."

It was a special day for Spaun, one that bagged him a $4.3 million top prize. The win has also, almost certainly, booked his place on the United States’ team for this year’s Ryder Cup. The Major win saw Spaun shoot up from 13th in the Team USA standings to 3rd, behind only Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.

Here’s a look at the standings after Spaun’s US Open win...

Six players will automatically qualify for Team USA and there is a real battle for places as it stands. Scheffler and possibly Schauffele look to have booked their spots, but Bryson Dechambeau, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa are certainly catchable.

However only half of the team will be dictated by these rankings. Team USA captain Keegan Bradley will hand-pick the other six members of the 12-man squad.

Looking back at the history, it would be extremely unusual for a reigning Major champion to be excluded from Team USA for the Ryder Cup. The last time that happened was in 1995, when John Daly won the Open Championship but was not selected. Daly is the only two-time Major winner to never appear at a Ryder Cup.

Spaun will almost certainly be taking part in the Ryder Cup for the first time but he is not a flash in the pan. His 2025 has been the best year of his career and he finished runner-up at The Players Championship earlier this year. He is now a man in the form of his life and he has certainly deserved his shot on the biggest stage in the world of golf.
