The 2025 PGA Tour is in full swing, with The American Express, the third event of the new season, to be played in La Quinta, California between Thursday, January 16 and Sunday, January 19.

World No. 21 Justin Thomas and Sungjae Im, ranked 19th, are seen as the favorites to join Hideki Matsuyama (The Sentry) and Nick Taylor (Sony Open in Hawaii) as the early winners on this season’s tour.

Among the other stand-out names in action in The American Express this week are world No. 7 Wyndham Clark, eight-time PGA Tour winner Patrick Cantlay and fav favorite Tony Finau.

Why Scheffler and Schauffle withdrew from the 2025 American Express

Both world Nos. 1 and 2 Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele had originally been due to take part in the first tournament in the West Coast Swing, but have withdrawn.

Scheffler won’t compete until the end of the month after undergoing minor surgery to remove glass fragments from his hand, which he cut while preparing Christmas dinner.

Schauffele, meanwhile, pulled out on Monday, with the PGA Tour not initially disclosing why. However, it was later revealed the Californian wouldn’t be taking part for an unspecified “medical reason”.

What’s the prize purse at The American Express 2025?

There will be an $8.8 million prize purse at La Quinta Country Club. The winner will take home a check for $1.58 million, in addition to being awarded 500 FedEx Cup points.

The American Express is significantly less lucrative than Signature Events and majors, which usually have prize purses of $20-$25 million. Of the 17 regular-season events (not including FedEx Cup Fall or Additional Events), this week’s tournament ranks 12th in terms of prize money.
