Tiger Woods made his much-anticipated TGL debut on Tuesday (January 14) although it proved to be one to forget for the 15-time major winner, as confirmed by son Charlie.

What happened in Tiger Woods' first TGL appearance?

Woods and his Jupiter Links Golf Club team, also comprising Max Homa and Kevin Kisner, were thrashed by 12-1 by Los Angeles Golf Club, represented by Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala.

“We hit six penalty areas, I had two shots out of a bunker and Kis nearly killed someone,” said Woods of his team’s efforts over the 15 holes played.

It wasn’t the debut appearance hoped for by Woods and his team, who were described as “not very good” by the long-time world No. 1’s 15-year-old son Charlie, who was in the audience, along with Serena Williams, who co-owns the LA team.

Still, the 49-year-old declared before the start of play he was there to “have fun,” and that certainly proved to be the case, as he explained after play had concluded: “I’m still hurting from laughing so hard”.

What is TGL and how does it work?

TGL is a technology-led indoor golf league, instigated by Woods and Rory McIlroy, in which six teams made up of three PGA Tour players go head-to-head against one another. Each team has four members, although only three play in any one match.

The competition begins with a round-robin format before semifinals and a best-of-three final. The first round-robin match took place on Tuesday, January 7, with the final to be played at the end of March.

TGL venue

All of the action takes place at SoFi Center, a venue built specifically for TGL on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Florida.

Shots taken from more than 50 yards from the hole are played into a 60ft high simulator, with anything inside that distance switching to a physical custom-built “Green Zone,” which rotates to offer different short-game challenges.

TGL format

Each match is played over 15 holes rather than the usual 18. The opening nine holes see all three players on each team play alternate shots, and the final six are head-to-head/singles with each player playing two holes.

Teams earn a point for winning a hole, the exception being when a team opts to use a ‘hammer’ on a certain hole, which doubles the points on offer on said hole.

Two points are awarded to the team that wins the match overall, which then count towards the league table.

How to watch TGL

Viewers in the United States can watch TGL on ESPN and ESPN+. Matches take place on Mondays and/or Tuesdays, depending on the week, with varying start times. Consult the full TGL schedule to be sure not to miss any of the action.
