In a stunning turn of events – well, maybe not that surprising if you know his history – Tyson Fury announced his retirement from professional boxing on January 13, 2025, following his recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The highly anticipated rematch, which took place on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, saw Usyk reclaim the unified heavyweight title, delivering a much-debated victory over the ‘Gypsy King’.

The two fighters first clashed in May of the previous year in a historic bout where Usyk emerged victorious by split decision, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis unified the titles in 2000. Fury, aged 36, entered the rematch determined to exact his revenge, aiming to reclaim his status as one of boxing’s premier heavyweights. However, Usyk proved to be the better man on the night, according to the judges.

In his retirement statement, Fury delivered a barbed message, referencing the famous English highwayman Dick Turpin.

Tyson Fury’s career in numbers

Fury’s illustrious career spanned over 17 years, during which he amassed a record of 34-2-1, with 24 knockouts. His only two defeats came against Usyk, the latter proving to likely be the final chapter in his boxing saga. The ‘Gypsy King’ first rose to prominence with his stunning victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, earning him Fighter of the Year honours and solidifying his place among boxing’s elite.

Throughout his career, Fury was known not only for his in-ring prowess but also for his charismatic and often unpredictable personality. From his early days capturing British, Commonwealth, and European titles to his trilogy bout against Derek Chisora in 2022, Fury consistently demonstrated resilience and an uncanny ability to overcome adversity, including a memorable comeback from a knockdown against Deontay Wilder in 2018.

Despite his decision to retire, not for the first time, Fury’s legacy in the heavyweight division is undeniable. His rivalry with Usyk has been one of the most compelling narratives in recent boxing history. As the dust settles on this chapter, fans will undoubtedly reflect on Fury’s contributions to boxing... while some will just be awaiting his return for a big money bout. AJ anyone?
