Watch Caitlin Clark nearly hit a fan with miscued tee shot at LPGA Pro-Am
The WNBA star is taking part in The Annika at Pelican Golf Club, playing alongside world No. 1 Nelly Korda.
Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark needed no time to settle in the WNBA, picking up the Rookie of the Year award in her debut season. On the golf course, however, things are not quite as smooth.
The 22-year-old is competing in the Pro-Am section of the LPGA Pro-Am at Pelican Golf Course this weekend. The annual competition is affectionately known as The Annika, in honour of tournament host Annika Sorenstam.
Clark is a keen golfer and joked about turning professional after Indiana’s playoff elimination earlier this year. She plays off a very respectable handicap of 16 but nearly had a major incident while teeing off on Wednesday.
She badly hooked a drive and scooped the ball towards a wall of spectators, some of whom were barely five yards away. Fortunately, Clark managed to make enough of a connection to chip the ball over the crowd, avoiding a potentially serious injury.
In typically nonchalant style, she followed that up by pulled a second ball from her pocket and launching a clean drive straight down the fairway. Strangely enough, Clark predicted that she might run in to some issues on the course.
“I’ve tried to practice as much as I can,” Clark said earlier this week. “I’m just an average golfer. I’m going to hit some good, going to hit some bad. It is what it is, I’m just trying not to hit anyone standing outside the ropes.”
