The International team defied all the odds to achieve an unprecedented Day 2 sweep at the biennial Presidents Cup on Friday. Jason Day and Si Woo Kim were right at the top of their game at Royal Montreal Golf Club as Mike Weir’s team served their rivals exactly the same treatment they suffered on Day 1, winning all five matches to tie the series at 5-5.

Historic day in Montreal

This was only the fifth time we have seen a sweep in a four-ball session in the tournament’s 30-year history - and the first time that the internationals have achieved it against the United States.

Weir said afterwards that he could not be more proud of his players while Adam Scott, who accompanied Taylor Pendrith to a 3-and-2 victory over Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala hailed, “an incredible day for us to come back and show everyone what this team is made of.”

US to tee off first on Saturday

In contrast to what we saw on Thursday, the internationals were only behind once on Day 2 and that was only for one hole. It sets us up nicely for Day 3, continuing with the four-ball format with Jim Furyk’s US team teeing off first in their match as Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa take on Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith.

Next up, Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau will go head-to-head with Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes. Sungjae Im and Tom Kim take on Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley, before Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns bring the day’s action to a close against Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im.

2024 Presidents Cup: Day 3 Foursomes

  • Match 1 (1:02 p.m. ET): Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith (International) vs. Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa (USA)
  • Match 2 (1:20 p.m. ET): Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes (International) vs. Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau (USA)
  • Match 3 (1:38 p.m. ET): Sungjae Im and Tom Kim (International) vs. Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley (USA)
  • Match 4 (1:56 p.m. ET): Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (International) vs. Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns (USA)

Saturday’s Day 3 action features two sessions - four matches of fourballs, four matches of foursomes before the 12 singles matches to conclude the tournament on Sunday.

The United States are aiming to secure what would be their 10th straight Presidents Cup. The US have not been beaten in this competition since Peter Thomson guided the International team to victory in Melbourne in 1998, with the 2019 edition ending in a tie.

The Presidents Cup pits the United States against an International team that represents the rest of the world, excluding Europe, and is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prize money on the line.
