What does TGL stand for? Golf’s new indoor simulator league | Format and teams
The 15-week golf league starts today and is backed by TMRW Sports and investors such as Steph Curry and Fenway Sports Group

Players from six teams will compete in the league and matches will be played indoors at the Palm Beach State College campus. Golfers will hit shots into a 64-foot x 53 foot golf simulator with grass, fairways, roughs and sand to give the players and fans a close-to-real feel.
What does TGL stand for?
TGL is an acronym for Tomorrow’s Golf League. The league was supposed to kick off a year ago, but technical issues and other obstacles forced Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to push back the start date to Jan. 7, 2025.
Why did the TGL golf league get postponed?
Woods and McIlroy launched the technology-focused golf league, in partnership with the PGA Tour, in August, 2022. “We’ve been working on this for two years,” McIlroy said at the original launch presentation. “I think it’s a great opportunity for PGA Tour players to show a different side of themselves, prime time on Monday night. I think it’s great for brand exposure to try to engage a different audience.”
Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley partnered Woods and McIlroy to form TMRW Sports, but due to the sport dome’s roof collapsing in November 2023, the start of the indoor golf simulator league got pushed back one year.

What’s the format for TGL? How does it work?
Three players from each team participate in the match. Players compete on 15 holes for approximately 2 hours. Players will compete in a “triples” 3 v 3 match play alternate shot format. Points will be awarded to the team that wins the hole with the fewest shots. No points will be given if a hole is tied (pushed).
The six remaining holes will be played in “singles” format in which one player from each team plays directly against a player from the opposing team. As in match play, a point will be awarded for each hole won. Teams can up the stakes by using “the hammer.” If the other team accepts the challenge, the hole then is worth two points instead of one.
Players will hit shots into the screen which will simulate the 15 holes on the “course.” They will hit from areas with real grass, fairways, rough and sand. Just like in real golf outdoors, players try to get to the green. Once they do, they will find different slopes, pin placements and other variables that will be simulated on the 22,475-square-foot short game area.
Each match will take place on a 15-hole course, although 30 holes have been designed in total by golf course design companies. The field of play in the SoFi center is approximately the size of a football field (97 yards long x 50 yards wide), which is where the drives and long iron shots take place into the simulator and then players will chip and putt on the GreenZone for short game action.
