What happened to Max Homa? The PGA Tour star is struggling in 2025

Arguably one of golf’s nicest guys, Homa has struggled since contending at the 2024 Masters and the 6-time PGA Tour winner just can’t find his game.

Born in Chicago, Joe played varsity football and baseball in Bowling Green, Ohio for BGHS and later played lacrosse at BGSU. A year abroad in Spain changed everything. As destiny would have it he ended up living in Zaragoza, running his own business, teaching Journalism at a private university then working as a SEO journalist for Diario AS.
Update:

It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. One of social media’s favorite pro golfers missed another cut this weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. So far this year the golfer from California has only made two cuts: a T26 at the Sentry and T53 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has missed the cut in his last five outings: WM Phoenix Open, The Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship (he shot +7 on Thursday and will need a miracle to make the cut) as well as a WD at the Farmers Insurance Open after an opening round 77 and missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open.

Although, it looks like he’s going to make the cut at the Masters on Friday.

Popular on Twitter for roasting golfers’ swings and other interactions with YouTubers and other pros, Homa has decided to get off of X: “No, I think I’ve finally had a come-to-Jesus moment that it’s for the sick. I was sick. I’m just trying to get healthy now,” He said. “I have not enjoyed that app. It’s not very fun. It’s fun to watch out little highlights or lowlights, and that stuff is fun. The rest of it’s probably not great, so I’m going to stick to TikTok.”

Homa also recently split with his caddie Joe Greiner and now has Bill Harke on his bag, which will hopefully make a positive impact on his game.

Homa was the lone bright spot on the 2023 Ryder Cup team in Italy. He got 3.5 points for the US with a 3-1-1 record. If he doesn’t find his swing and get his game back on track, he’s going to be watching the 2025 Ryder Cup from home.

What happened to Homa?

It’s golf. Anyone who has played the game knows how hard it is to play consistently, even the pros. There are many examples of pros who were at the top of the game and things just spun out of control. We’ll look at some examples below, but the truth is only Homa and his caddie and coaches know what’s going on. Homa has said it’s not his new equipment change, going from Titleist to Cobra. He’s been working on his swing too and it could be related to the old saying: “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Who knows, maybe it’s analyzing and roasting too many amateur golfers’ swings. Watching some of those hackers try to hit the ball can’t be benefitial for anyone.

Examples of golfers who lost their game

Some names immediately come to mind: Immelman, Daly, Harrington, but even Tiger Woods, who dominated the game from 1996 to 2009, lost his game. He had two good seasons in 2012 and 2013 and didn’t win again until 2019 at the Masters. Even the world’s best can lose his mojo and Tigers’ record over the past 10 years is an example:

Tiger’s record over the past 10 years

2014: Played in seven tournaments with two cuts, two WDs and best finish T17 Hero World Challenge
2015: 11 tournaments with four cuts, one WD and best result T10 at the Wyndham Championship.
2016: One tournament at the Hero World Challenge (15)
2017: Two tournaments - Best finish Hero World Challenge (T9)
2018: 19 tournaments - Two cuts and and a win at the 2018 Tour Championship and second place at the PGA Championship
2019: Two cuts and a win at the 2019 Masters
2020: Three tournaments, cut at 2020 US Open and T38 at the Masters
2021: No tournaments
2022: Three tournaments: Masters (47), PGA Championship WD and British Open (cut)
2023: Three tournaments: Masters (WD), best finish Hero World Challenges (18)
2024: Made 1 cut out of five appearances.

Duval is another example. He won 11 times on the PGA Tour between 1997 and 1999. He even won the 1999 Bob Hope Classic with an eagle on the last hole to shoot 59. Duval was at that top of his game and was expected to challenge Woods in his prime, but it never happened and his career hit rock bottom fast. He ended up at one point ranked 1,532nd ranked golfer in the world.
