When does Team Europe Captain Luke Donald announce his picks for the 2023 Ryder Cup?
With all of the automatic spots to be filled after this week’s play in Switzerland, Luke Donald will have six captain’s choice spots for Team Europe.
Team Europe are determined to win back the Ryder Cup in Rome and the team is nearly set, with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Tyrrell Hatton already qualified for the team.
There are two more automatic spots to be claimed and they are currently being contested between Robert MacIntyre, Yannik Paul, Tommy Fleetwood, and Matt Fitzpatrick in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, Rasmus Hojgaard and Adrian Otaegui also have an outside chance of making up the numbers.
Once those spots are filled at the end of the week, European Captain Luke Donald will have six captain’s choice slots to award. He will announce his determination on Monday, September 4th.
Donald will be hoping for a win by MacIntyre this week so as to avoid any uncomfortable situation arising from having to select a LIV golfer. This is an ugly scene that simply won’t go away, particularly with Rory McIlroy making such a vocal fuss about his displeasure with the LIV players.
Either way, once Team Europe is formed, they will challenge the US to bring the Ryder Cup back across the water at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, just outside Rome, from Friday, September 29 to Sunday October 1st.
