Breaking the drought: This is the last time an American won the Australian Open
Madison Keys flys the flag for the United States as she prepares to face Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 Australian Open women’s singles final.

The 2025 Australian Open sees two American players still in contention with Madison Keys winning out on Thursday in an epic semi-final match against No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek. The 29-year-old now faces a stern challenge in Saturday’s women’s singles final as she takes on top seed and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka with the Belarusian looking to secure her third consecutive title in Melbourne.
In the men’s competition, No. 21 seed Ben Shelton will have his work cut out as he faces top seeded Jannik Sinner in the second semi-final at the Rod Laver Arena. The winner will progress to battle Alexander Zverev in the final after veteran star Novak Djokovic was forced to retire late in the first set with an ongoing groin issue forcing the Serbian out of the contest.

US reign waning
There was a time when the US men ruled the Australian Open, but those days are long past. With Serena Williams retiring a few years ago, it looks as if the American days of dominance on the women’s side may be equally waning. The last American man to win the Australian Open was André Agassi, who took the top prize in 2003, 2001, 2000, and 1995. His final victory in 2003 also marked the last appearance by an American man in the final at Melbourne.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams dominated the finals throughout the 21st century, but the last American woman to take top prize was Sofia Kenin in 2020.
