Eugene, Oregon was our host last year (with the scheduled 2021 World Athletics Championships delayed a year due to the covid pandemic) and we saw numerous examples of supreme athleticism over the 10 days of competition. But as the final celebrations and commiserations died down, thoughts turned to which nations had collected the most medals.

How many medals did Team USA win in 2022?

Size often matters in these events and it was the United States who topped the final medal count with a total count of 28, including 10 golds. The US took a commanding lead into the final day of events from Hayward Field, and finished strong with five medals on the Sunday, including golds in the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay.

Ethiopia finished second, earning most of their medals in long distance running events, including golds in the men’s and women’s marathon. They finished tied at 10 medals with Kenya and Jamaica, but their four golds give them the edge over Kenya and Jamaica who had two golds.

The main event of the final day from Eugene was the men’s decathlon. Frenchman Kevin Mayer won the ten sport event with a score of 8816,

The moment of the closing day was when Tobi Amusan of Nigeria broke the Women’s 100m hurdles world record with a 12.12 in the semifinal. Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis broke his own world record with a final pole vault of 6.21m.

There were eight other medal events on the final day as countries fought for positioning on the total medal count table. The first of which was the men’s 35 km race walk, which was won by Italian Massimo Stano.

There were seven other final day gold medal events in which medals were won:
