Prepare for competition days with waterproofs, hand warmers, hoodies, woolen hats, snoods, and scarves. It’s that time of year again - the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is on the horizon.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be back from the 3rd to the 6th of October, 2024. If the weather is mild, you can expect to see the Old Course being played exceptionally well. However, it will be a different story if the wind starts howling. The weather report predicts a high chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday during the competition, with winds expected to be above 15 km/h.

Alfred Dunhill is the longest-running European Tour sponsor and the only professional championship to be played annually over the historic Old Course at St Andrews, alongside the Championship Course at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns Golf Links.

Matt Fitzpatrick, the reigning 2023 champion, will be back to defend his title against players such as Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, and Robert MacIntyre, also LIV Golf’s Jon Rahm, who got his Category 1 invitation as the previous winner of the DP Tour’s Race to Dubai Rankings along with the American golfer Brooks Koepka.

2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship: favorites to win

Heavy rain affected the event twelve months ago, causing it to be shortened to 54 holes. Matt Fitzpatrick won his first DP World Tour title in two years, finishing three strokes ahead in a Monday finish. He also won the Pro-Am alongside his mother, Susan.

The 2022 US Open champion shot a six-under 66 on the Old Course at St Andrews, finishing at 19-under-par overall. Heavy rain washed out play on Saturday and Sunday, reducing the event to 54 holes. Thanks to the remarkable efforts of the greenkeepers at the three courses, play only resumed on Monday.

Fitzpatrick is expected to be one of the top contenders to win the tournament. However, Rory McIlroy currently holds a substantial lead in the Race to Dubai. McIlroy will be determined to secure a victory this week, especially after finishing as runner-up at both the Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship in consecutive weeks, where he was up against Rasmus Hojgaard and Billy Horschel.

A strong field of golfers is also competing, including Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, and Nicolai Hojgaard. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are also playing after appealing their suspensions. Additionally, LIV golfers like Brooks Koepka, Talor Gooch, Branden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen, and Patrick Reed have been invited by the tournament sponsors.
