Unlike its previous venue at Redstone, this year’s tournament finds its old home again at the esteemed Memorial Park Golf Course. Memorial Park holds a special place in recent tournament history, hosting the Houston Open in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Known for its challenging yet captivating layout, the municipal course sees over 60,000 rounds of golf annually, drawing players from around the world.

Originally designed by John Bredemus in 1935, the course underwent extensive renovation in 2019, led by architect Tom Doak with assistance from Brooks Koepka. With minimal sand hazards, Memorial Park is categorized as a “midscore” course, presenting a fair challenge to players.

This year’s tournament promises exciting competition, with weather conditions and course adjustments influencing the expected scoring. Stretching over 7,435 yards and featuring 23 bunkers, Memorial Park offers a formidable test for the field. Notably, the course boasts five par 3s and three par 5s, deviating from the traditional par 70 setup.

Course conditions, including the Bermuda grass overseeded with poa trivialis, are expected to impact gameplay. Softer surfaces are likely due to recent rainfall. Additionally, organizers have slightly trimmed the rough, aligning with the PGA Tour’s trend toward more player-friendly setups.

Field and top players

Scotty Scheffler is probably the strongest contender in the tournament, especially on courses with Bermuda grass overseeded with Poa trivialis greens, where he has excelled. He has won five out of his eight PGA Tour victories on similar surfaces, including at Bay Hill and the Masters. His expertise in putting on Bermuda grass greens makes him a formidable player on such courses.

Even though his putting game might not be his strongest suit, Scheffler’s overall performance, particularly in strokes gained from tee to green, sets him apart as a top-tier contender. His ability to navigate the course effectively and gain strokes consistently each round makes him a force to be reckoned with. William Hill Sportsbook offered enticing odds of 20 to one, with eight places each way, underscoring Scheffler’s status as a favorite in this tournament.

However, the competition is fierce, like Sahith Theegala, with odds of 20 to one. Theegala’s hunger for victory and impressive track record make him a contender worth considering. Winning this tournament would secure his spot in prestigious events like the President’s Cup, a notable milestone for the Indian-born golfer.

Kurt Kitayama is another contender at odds of 55 to one. Kitayama’s past successes on challenging courses, coupled with his strong performances in key metrics like strokes gained, position him as a dark horse capable of making waves in the tournament.

At odds of 70 to one, Taylor Moore rounds out the list of compelling contenders. Despite his relatively low profile, Moore’s past triumphs and recent momentum make him a wildcard worth considering. His ability to excel on challenging courses and penchant for rising to the occasion bodes well for his prospects at the Houston Open.
