The long-awaited 2024 Formula 1 season finally kicked off with a hugely entertaining Bahrain Grand Prix that showed us that, despite the technological innovations and driver changes, not much has changed at all.

Red Bull and Max Verstappen have dominated F1 and they continue to do so over the rest, beating even an inspired Sergio Pérez who had a fantastic start to the year with second place in Bahrain.

Max Verstappen looked solid in the race by taking the checkered flag with a devastating lead of 22 seconds over Checo. The Dutchman dominated the Sakhir GP with pleasure to conquer his first win of the year and immediately put himself top of the World Championship standings with 26 points, since he also took the accolade of fastest lap that awards an extra point.

This is how the F1 2024 drivers’ world championship looks:

  1. Max Verstappen | 26 pts
  2. Sergio Pérez | 18 pts
  3. Carlos Sainz | 15 pts
  4. Charles Leclerc | 12 pts
  5. George Russell | 10 pts
  6. Lando Norris | 8 pts
  7. Lewis Hamilton | 6 pts
  8. Oscar Piastri | 4 pts
  9. Fernando Alonso | 2 pts
  10. Lance Stroll | pts
  11. Guanyu Zhou | 0 pts
  12. Kevin Magnussen | 0 pts
  13. Daniel Ricciardo | 0 pts
  14. Yuki Tsunoda | 0 pts
  15. Alexander Albon | 0 pts
  16. Nico Hulkenberg | 0 pts
  17. Esteban Ocon | 0 pts
  18. Pierre Gasly | 0 pts
  19. Valtteri Bottas | 0 pts
  20. Logan Sargeant | 0 pts

For his part, Sergio Pérez finished in second place and from there he begins his fight to make things difficult for Verstappen. Any honest person would say that task is a near-impossible feat to achieve, but Checo must be close to him and keep pace with the Belgian if he wants to earn his renewal with Red Bull in 2025.

“I think the car was really nice to drive on every compound. We had a lot of pace”, said Verstappen after the race. “It was just super enjoyable to drive today; we really stayed out of trouble. Great start to the year. I mean, it couldn’t have been better.” Completing the podium was Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who will likely be one of Checo’s main rivals as the season continues.
