88,000 Finalissima tickets sold – but where will Spain vs Argentina actually be played?

The staging of the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina on March 27 has become a growing headache in recent days. The Spanish federation and its Argentine counterpart are awaiting developments following decisions expected in Qatar. With the escalation of conflict in countries surrounding Iran and official competitions suspended in Qatar, host of the Finalissima, the game is now in limbo. A change of venue or date has not been ruled out, but the options are narrowing fast. The calendar is already packed with international friendlies ahead of the World Cup.

The decision over the Qatar Football Festival – the event built around Spain v Argentina and featuring five additional games, including a Spain clash against Egypt – rests directly with Qatar’s highest authorities and the Emir himself. UEFA and CONMEBOL are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant contact. A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to assess the various scenarios on the table.

What is certain is that caution will guide any move. Contracts have been signed with Qatar, which is responsible for payment, and insurance policies are in place in the event of last-minute complications. Any resolution will prioritize the safety of the participating national teams above all else.

Possible locations for Finalissima

Capacity and date are key factors. Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente openly suggested a change of venue: “The solution would be, I understand, to look for another place while it cannot be played there in Qatar. If that is possible.” That “if possible” leaves the door ajar to moving the match abroad, although realistic options are limited. With 88,800 tickets already sold, any alternative stadium would need to offer significant capacity.

Spain remains one possibility. Hosting the match in Madrid would put the Santiago Bernabéu in play, an ideal stage for a fixture of this stature and currently available on March 27. The complication lies in the fact that the Metropolitano is set to host a Morocco v Ecuador friendly that same evening at 3:15 p.m. ET, raising potential security concerns. Atlético’s stadium was also the site of the last Spain-Argentina meeting, a 6-1 victory for Spain on March 27, 2018.

London is effectively ruled out. Wembley Stadium staged the 2022 Finalissima between Italy and Argentina, but England has friendlies scheduled against Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31.

Miami is also off the table. Hard Rock Stadium, which seats 65,000, is occupied through March 29 by the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament.

The New York-New Jersey area, however, has gained traction. MetLife Stadium, a host venue for the next World Cup with eight games including the final, holds more than 80,000 spectators and meets the requirements for a match of this magnitude. It would be a leading candidate if Qatar ultimately cannot stage the event.

Rabat represents another viable alternative. Moving the Finalissima to Morocco would not be far-fetched. The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, inaugurated in 2025, seats nearly 70,000. It hosted the most recent Africa Cup of Nations final and will stage a Diamond League athletics meeting on May 8. The venue is also slated to host games at the 2030 World Cup.

Other European options appear limited. The Stade de France in Saint-Denis is booked for a Senegal v Peru friendly on March 28. Portugal has previously stepped in as a last-minute host for major events, as it did for the 2020 Champions League final, and the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon has no events scheduled for those dates. Portugal’s national team will be playing friendlies in Mexico and Atlanta at that time.

For now, the Finalissima remains suspended between uncertainty and contingency planning, its fate tied to decisions beyond the pitch.
