Ajax are willing to sell highly-rated midfielder Edson Álvarez in the summer transfer window, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has reported.

Chelsea wanted Álvarez in mid-season window

Although there don’t appear to be any concrete offers for Álvarez as things stand, it should be remembered that Chelsea were interested in the Mexican international in January, only for Ajax to block the Premier League club’s advances.

The 25-year-old, who has 60 caps for Mexico, has won two Dutch titles since leaving Club América for Amsterdam in 2019.

Reijnders in for Álvarez?

If Álvarez moves on at the end of the season, his replacement at the Johan Cruyff Arena could well be AZ Alkmaar’s Tijjani Reijnders, De Telegraaf says.

The 24-year-old, who has been at AZ since 2018, has helped the two-time domestic champions to third in the Eredivisie table this season, two points behind Ajax and five behind leaders Feyenoord.

According to the transfer-value specialists Transfermarkt, Reijnders has an expected price tag of €6 million.

Ajax set to face Feyenoord in ‘Klassieker’

Ajax meet Feyenoord in the Dutch top flight this weekend, in a clash that will have a major bearing on the outcome of the title race.

The match-up in the Dutch capital will see Álvarez come up against Mexico colleague Santiago Giménez, whose performances for Feyenoord are attracting attention from several clubs across Europe.
