After tying the Américas record of eight consecutive victories set by his Argentine predecessors Miguel Ángel López in the 1993-94 season and Jorge Solari in the Verano 1997, as well as that of Cruz Azul in the Clausura 2014 tournament, the Águilas team led by Fernando “Tano” Ortiz will seek this Saturday, on matchday 14 of the Apertura tournament to equal the record of nine consecutive wins that Toluca set in the Clausura 2018 tournament.

Chasing records for América

The possibility of equalling this record is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the match scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET (7 p.m. local) at the Victoria Stadium and where América are heading with some casualties from the lineup that it had used in the previous eight games which have brought the side eight consecutive wins.

Another important challenge for Coapa’s team is not only to match the Red Devils record but also to keep in the hunt for the record set by León and Cruz Azul of twelve consecutive victories. León set thay high-water mark in the Clausura 2019, and Cruz Azul in the Guardianes 2021 where they not only added twelve victories, but also ended a 23-year drought without Liga Mx titles.

Toluca’s nine consecutive victories

Toluca in the Clausura 2018 won their nine matches from matchday 8 to 16 where they beat Santos 2-0 on matchday eight, Querétaro 0-2 on matchday nine, Pachuca 2-1 on matchday ten, while in matchday eleven they beat Pumas 0-1, América 1-2 on matchday twelve, in the 13th they beat Lobos BUAP 1-2, while in the 14th they beat Tigres 1-0, Morelia 0-1 in the 15th and in the 16th they beat Veracruz 3-0, but unfortunately it was not enough for them to be champions as they lost in the final of this championship to Santos de Torreón.

So this Saturday in Aguascalientes get ready for a very interesting battle, with the added incentive of tying the Red Devils record, surpassing those set by Américas in 1993-94 and in the summer of 1997, as well as by Cruz Azul in the Clausura 2014 and also approach the twelve victories of León in the Clausura 2019 and of Cruz Azul in the Guardianes 2021.
